Hello 2014

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a good time with friends and family over the festive period.

Do you have any plans or resolutions for 2014?

Rather than a resolution, this year I’ve decided to do monthly themes. I’m hoping that having something different to focus on each month means I won’t get bored or frustrated and I’ll be more productive with my time.

January is going to be all about organising, sorting and cataloguing my stash, projects and what I’m planning to make. I’m starting by taking a photo of all my works in progress so I can make project pages on Ravelry for them. I think I’m going to cringe at how many there are once I’m done, I suspect its probably way more than I thought it was…

This will then set me up to tackle February’s theme which is going to be to finish as many WIPs as I can. I’m still deciding on the monthly themes for the rest of the year, let me know if you have any good ideas!

I’m also planning on getting back into running again. I started last year with the Couch to 5k programme (NHS version) which went great and I was regularly doing 5k Park Runs by the summer. I also cycled to work (a round trip of 14 miles!) until an irresponsible dog walker caused me to come off my bike and break my big toe which scuppered my running until recently. This year I’m going to aim for a 10k run.

Aims and Goals

I’ve decided to try and finish the socks on the my needles this month. I have 3 and currently they look like this:

3 Socks on the Needles

The orange socks are my Rick socks.
The purple and black are my Gothic Anastasia Delight socks.
The grey pair are my Bootiful socks (aka Rhiannon Socks.)

It might be a bit amibitious as I’ll need to finish a sock every 4.3 days but it’s doable and by rotating which pair I’m working on I’ll stave off Second Sock Syndrome. I may make it even more doable by frogging the Rhiannon socks. It turns out the yarn (Zettl Sockenwolle Treviso) is not superwash like it says on the label and apparently felts easily. I don’t mind have a pair of handwash socks, but if they’re going to felt quickly with normal wear then I’d rather make socks that aren’t as time consuming and pretty as Rhiannon. I’ll see how a small swatch fairs and let you know.

I’ve also been reassessing my New Years Resolutions. I set myself Eight Knitting Resolutions which works out to two every three months, so I’ve picked out two to finish by the end of March:

1. Write up and publish a pattern for sale. Also, spend more time writing up patterns in general.
I’ve spent more time writing up patterns. I’ve got a pattern test knitted and almost ready for release. So I think I will be able to tick this one off by the end of March.

3. Blog regularly(ish).
There’s been a couple of ‘ish’ spots since January but on the whole I think I’ve already achieved this one. :)

Knitting Resolutions

1. Write up and publish a pattern for sale. Also, spend more time writing up patterns in general.
2. Laceweight shawl. I can cope with 4ply shawls no problem but for some reason 2ply yarn is that much harder for me. Maybe bamboo needles will help? Anyone have any other advice?
3. Blog regularly(ish).
4. Entrelac
5. Learn to use my sewing machine.
6. Double knitting.
7. Dye yarn.
8. Steeking something.

I was going for 10 resolutions because that’s a nice round number, but I couldn’t remember anymore things I’d put on my mental ‘to-do’ list and to be honest, 8 is enough for now. I’ll see come June how many I’ve ticked off and re-assess.

I think I might also do a monthly theme. January’s will be ”Finish Your WIP’s”, which will tie in nicely with my pledge to not buy more yarn for at least a month (a result of taking advantage of the John Lewis sales). This may be a rather unrealistic challenge but I’ll give it a go. I’ve finished one thing (almost) already and cast on two others but that’s neither here nor there…
